American Eagle Distressed Denim Review

I recently went on a hunt for a great pair of distressed denim and while wandering through a mall in Minnesota I came across the window display of American Eagle…now…I can honestly say, I haven’t been inside an American Eagle store since high school. It took me a few moments to sift through memories of AE zip-up hoodies, cable knit cardigans and cut off shorts…but after pushing aside the early, not so flattering, pre-teen and teen years that were American Eagle and Abercrombie style…I made my way into the store and I fell in love with their denim all over again. And lucky you! You get to see my lovely fitting room selfies which include some of my favorite distressed AE denim. I wanted to buy all of the pairs I tried on…but I left the store with one, stay tuned for a style blog post on which I chose coming soon! In the meantime, feel free to click the links that accompany the photos below to shop the denim yourself.

Tomgirl Jean – Abraded Blue
These jeans were so comfortable. Seriously one of my favorites. The only downside was that they secure solely on a set of buttons and no zipper which can be a pain. The Tomgirl Jean comes in three colors (all which you’ll see by scrolling below). This color was the abraded blue and I liked it a lot, but the others were great too.

AEO Denim X Jegging
I really liked this pair of jeans…however, it is all about where the wear and tear is…and I can’t say I was crazy about the tattered knees. I felt like it drew too much attention to that area of my legs. Not my faves, but not terrible either!
Score: 4 out of 10

American Eagle Denim X Skinny Jeans
I was drawn to this lighter pair of denim jeans and while I really liked them I didn’t LOVE them. I didn’t mind where the rips were but overall darker jeans just seem to flatter me more.
Score: 7 out of 10

Tomgirl Jean – White Out
These jeans are the same in the first photo just a different color. I typically loathe white denim on me. It shows every bump, nook and cranny these legs carry…but so not the case with this pair! High fives all around!
Score: 9.5 out of 10

Tomgirl Jean – Dark
Same lovely pair of jeans as the ones above (white pair) and the first ones in this post, but these are in the “dark” shade. Love love love….love love. All of the Tomgirl jeans…rock!
Score: 9.5 out of 10

American Eagle Hi-Rise Jeggings
I liked these….however, the flappity-flap that is the distressed “knee patch”…left me feeling a bit strange. I couldn’t imagine walking around like a hunk of material flopping, it would drive me nuts! Not my faves. However, take off the one flappy knee patch and I would be sold because the color and markings were wonderful.

American Eagle Hi-Rise Jegging in Smoked
These were nice. Not crazy about them. Just nice. Nice in a “safe” way….?
Score: 6 out of 10

American Eagle Jegging in Bright Indigo
Loved these with a deep and lustful passion…however, I didn’t get them. I am kicking myself right now because everything about them was perfection. I wonder if they still have my size in store….may need to find out this weekend. Aside from a slightly too big thigh rip/tear (whatever you want to call it)….I love them.
Score: 9 out of 10

American Eagle Hi-Rise Jegging in Night Fall Tear
Sorry these last photos are a tad on the blurry side…however, I loved these too! As you can see…there wasn’t a pair I didn’t truly like. I liked them all…if I had reason to buy 10+ pairs of denim jeans I would have. This final pair also won me over. I love dark denim, I am a sucker for it. Hold a piece of cheese and a pair of dark denim jeans up in front of me…and it is a tough choice…(I’d still go with the cheese)…but you’d have me thinking it through! These dark denim jeans were perfection.
Score: 9.5 out of 10

I was browsing American Eagles website and also came across a handful of denim jeans that I hadn’t seen in the store but could only have imagined would have been great to test out! Here are some more of my favorites I may need to go back and test. I also loved some of their flare denim…but have yet to get in there to try them on. Future blog post similar to this one if it didn’t bore you out of your mind?!? Yes, no – maybe so? Leave a comment below and let me know what you think about AE denim and any of the pairs I shared in this blog post 🙂

These look great on you, I’m going to have to take a trip to AE soon. And may I ask where your jacket is from? I’m obsessed!

  2. Love this post and the ratings system you use. I love those white ones and the very first pair you’re wearing. I haven’t been to an AE in so long but I swear last week in lulu whenever I complimented someone on their jeans or tops, they were from AE. Please do more of these posts, love em!

Hello, If you don't mind me asking, how is the sizing in American Eagle jeans? I mean, what's your usual size and what do you get in AE?

Thanks and greetings from Costa Rica

I think the sizing is pretty spot on! I always like my denim a litlte looser…so I may go with a size up from time to time. My usual size is a 6 or 8 depending on the brand. I think I was trying on a size 6 in these images 🙂
