You may recall a blog post I wrote a while back where I mentioned how when Dusty started medical school he handed the finance managing over to me (insert ambient horror music). His time is so limited, so for him, the thought of sitting down to work through finances once a week would be daunting…and unless we wanted our water or heat to be shut off due to his forgetting to pay the bills, naturally, the task of Collins family CFO got passed over to me. God help us. Managing finances was and is not my forte. It is about as exciting as organizing a sock drawer… So I reluctantly took on the task and must say I have been fairly impressed with myself! Over the past few months I have been using an excel spreadsheet to manage things and for the most part it has worked well enough, however, as of late I came across this great website/web app called FitFin to help me manage my day-to-day spending and I am a BIG fan! FitFin took the average budgeting Joe (the old me) and created a budgeting rockstar (the new me) – watch out world! I almost forgot to tell you, it is free to sign up for FitFin, which makes me (and the hubs) quite happy!
Below photo, where the budgeting happens…
FitFin is short for Fit Finances (envision chiseled abs and an extremely toned gluteus maximus – that even Arnold Schwarzenegger would be jealous of). With FitFin, you only need to glance at your budget for about ten seconds to know what is going on. FitFin makes things easy; they combine your budget with your shopping list. This probably sounds about as natural as chocolate-covered jalapeno poppers, but let me explain how it works.
FitFin is three tools in one: A budget, an expense tracker, and a shopping list—and they all work in sync.
You set up your budget(s) in seconds. You can create budgets for things like groceries, dining out, or shoes you can’t live without. You can also set temporary budgets for vacations (which is perfect for my travel bug). All of your budgets are summarized on the Budgets Overview page, so you’ll know where you stand with just a click of a button. There are even historical charts to help monitor spending over time. With FitFin, you can save an item’s price and quantity. Then when you activate items on your shopping list, FitFin will give you an estimated spend total for the list. Plus, there’s a “Check budget” link right on the shopping list so you know what you’re going to spend ahead of time AND how it affects your budget. And last, but not least, there is the super handy expense tracker. You just take a picture of your receipt, attach it to the expense, and FitFin organizes your expenses so you can sort them by store or by date. Each expense is tallied against the budget to give you real-time spending-to-budget info.
